![]() For others, such as the Shuttle and Constellation Programs, all phase of operations, except for on-orbit, expose the vehicle to some level of threat. For expendables, the threat is restricted to pre-launch ground processing and ascent phases. ![]() Lightning is a capricious and potentially deadly hazard that is common to all spacecraft. Emphasis is placed on special innovative analytical techniques implemented to support the Space Shuttle program. This paper includes a selective overview of the CSSL operational supports to the Space Shuttle C&T system. The CSSL has developed analytical and numerical simulation tools that model spacecraft communication systems to assure overall Communication and Tracking (C&T) system performance and Radio Frequency compatibility to support manned spaceflight programs. The Communication System Simulation Laboratory (CSSL) at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)/Johnson Space Center (JSC) was established to perform manned spacecraft communication system performance and compatibility analysis. This paper highlights some of those avionic system upgrades and the valuable lessons learned. Avionics hardware upgrades involving such systems as the General Purpose Computers, Multifunction Electronic Display System and Master Events Controller have taken place out of necessity and to replace obsolete components. ![]() The Space Shuttle program has presented some unique challenges in the areas of Integrated Avionics during its 30+ years. ![]()
